What is psychology and how can it help me?Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour. Psychologists help individuals understand and manage emotional, mental, and behavioural challenges. Therapy can provide tools and insights to improve mental well-being, manage stress, overcome trauma, and navigate life’s challenges.
-
What can I expect in my first session? In your first session, your psychologist will take the time to understand your concerns, background, and what brought you to seek therapy. They will discuss your goals for therapy and begin developing a plan tailored to your needs. It's a chance for you to ask questions and get comfortable with the process.
-
How do I prepare for my first session? Before your first session, take some time to reflect on what you want to achieve in therapy. You don’t need to prepare anything specific, but it may be helpful to think about the challenges or concerns you want to discuss. Feel free to write down any questions or goals you have for therapy.
-
How many sessions will I need? The number of sessions depends on your individual goals and the issues you're working through. Some people benefit from just a few sessions, while others may need longer-term support. Your psychologist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan with you.
-
How long is each therapy session?Session at Inner pathways Psychology are 50 minutes long.
-
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist? You do not need a referral to see a psychologist. However, if you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
-
Can I claim private health insurance rebates for therapy?Yes, if you have private health insurance that covers psychology services, you may be eligible for a rebate. Please check with your insurer to confirm the details of your coverage. We can provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurer.
-
Can telehealth therapy be covered by insurance or Medicare?Yes, telehealth sessions are often covered by private health insurance and can also be eligible for Medicare rebates if you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Please check with your insurer or GP for more details.
-
Are telehealth services available?Yes, we offer telehealth (online) sessions, providing you with the flexibility to attend therapy from the comfort of your own home. Telehealth services are particularly useful for those in remote areas, with mobility challenges, or with busy schedules.
-
How do I access a telehealth session?Telehealth sessions are conducted via secure video conferencing platforms. You’ll receive a link to your session by email before your appointment. All you need is a device with a camera, microphone, and a stable internet connection.
-
Is telehealth as effective as in-person therapy?Yes! Research shows that telehealth therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of issues. The therapeutic relationship, consistency of care, and evidence-based techniques used in online sessions contribute to positive outcomes.
-
Is everything I discuss in therapy confidential?Yes, everything you discuss in therapy is confidential. Psychologists are required by law to keep your information private. However, there are some exceptions, such as if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by a court of law. Your psychologist will explain these confidentiality boundaries at your first session.
-
Can I bring my partner to therapy?Yes, we offer couples therapy to help partners work through relationship issues, improve communication, and strengthen their connection. Couples therapy can be a valuable tool for navigating conflicts or enhancing a healthy relationship.
-
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?A psychologist focuses on therapy and counseling, helping people understand and manage their emotions and behaviors. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and provide medical treatment alongside therapy. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.
